I am considering a MAP clean. But, I'll wait until I do the EGR. Because, if it's a mess in there, I don't want to knock lumps of crud into the intake ports.

However, if it is really caked up in there, I'm concerned that removing the manifold will lead to crud falling to the intake ports anyway.

The logical extension of this removing the head to clean the intake ports as well. But, this is beyond my capability at the moment.

I'm going round in circles here. What advice would give here as I suspect it will need a clean, but can't see how to get the manifold off without risking crud in the intake ports?

I think you are overly worrying , the gunk in the manifold is normaly fairly sticky from my experience.

when you take the EGR off you will be able to either get a look down there with a mirror or get a photo to see how bad it is. Pulling the MAP sensor out should not cause massive amounts of gunk to fall in the manifold or down a port.

Cheers
