Any suggestions as to how I can de-magnetize spanners

What you need is a "bulk demagnitiser" this is your simplist solution. Libraries use these to demagnitise piles of books at a time.

Books need to be demagnitised so when you check them out so they don't setoff the alarms.

Bulk Demagnitisers are heavy handheld elctromagnets. There is prolly one in your University Library. Hold the Demagnitiser over your tool and pull the trigger.

That should do it.
