01 Td4 now not starting, turning fine. Disconnected low pressure lift to see if fuel coming out. It comes out with quite a gurgle sounds like air. Normal or not. I would not expect it to power out as its pre injection pump, but was not expecting the gurgle either and ideas.
Cheers

Assuming it has a hose between it's inlet and the fuel tank I would suspect it's drawing in air there.(also assuming adequate fuel in tank!) Carefully check the condition of the hose and it's connections.

The pump is prob ok. I would be looking at an injector leaking so will not pressurise system. Two ways to test first use a bit of easy start and see if it runs ok once started, take it for a run around but do not switch off untill you have parked where you want as may not restart. The other way to check injectors is take off cover and remove the return pipes from the injectors clamping the pipe after the last injector, turn on ignition and watch for fuel coming out of top of the injector if it takes less than 8/10 seconds then the injector has failed.

Cheers Guys, will have a look in morning, as I say it wont start suddenly today, plenty fuel in tank. Even changed fuel filter in case blocked, will check injectors and hose, what a job checking hoses, tomorrow.
Cheers R

i have experienced exactly the same problem, mine would not start after being left in car park after driving fine to get there !
there is no fuel getting to the injectors. i backtracked from the injectors and also diconnected the lift pump pipe where it comes out of the fuel filter. it was spluttering a bit of fuel out which i thought was far from enough.( it was also making gurgling noises from the pump/fuel filter ) i then disconnected the pipe direct from the pump outlet- nothing ! just air.
the next thing i tried was to disconnect the pipe to the inlet of the pump and put it in a can of diesel just to make sure the pump was actually working which it was. this had the effect of pumping enough fuel through to the injection pump to start her up but it soon ran out and stopped again.
i believe freelander td4's from 2002 onwards have a pump somewhere around the rear wheel arch which i would assume sends the fuel from the tank to the lift pump. i have a 2000 model year td4. are these different or do they use the same sort of system.
at the moment i am thinking that the problem is that no fuel is being pumped from the tank to the lift pump.
can anybody advise on this.
cheers

Yep thinking of the same possibility, pre 03 have pump in tank after this in year arch, will try the diesel to pump via container trick see if that works as well. i am going to to busy/dirty.
Many thanks

Stuck, wont start on Easy Start, runs for a few seconds presume on ether then stops, time to phone the garage.

Yup roamer. . . .yer right it shuld **** out. . . .yer got two lp pumps on yer gaylander ist in tank 2nd in rhs engine bay [lift pump]. . . .with ignition on , put hand on lift pump [should vibrate tween 10=20sec then stop] if it dont check 1 fuel pump fuse, 2 fuel pump relay. . . .now both pumps run off same output. . . .if happy with above then disconnect i/p to fuel filter and switch on ign [should **** out] if that is good do the same to o/p off [lift pump] same again should **** out. . . .if either pumps as you put it gurgle or foam, then the pump is u/s so replace, , , , ,the real bummer is when they are intermittent. . . . .

I am pretty sure its the lp lift pump in bay that is causing probs, it does go for the 20 odd seconds then stop but it changes pitch of sound like a slow strangled cat. How ever on looking at injectors third from left looks damp at base. the rest have light red colour surface rust, the other is a dark diesel colour. At 200 odd for the pump and what ever for injector I will get a proper diag from garage since I need to fly bits to Ireland anyway so sadly I cant just buy the bits and do want I think it is. Many thanks for the reply.

Thats ok roamer. . . . .but remember this little gem [might help yer] that the diagnostics cannot pick up which lp fuel pump is playing up as they are both on same o/p and it will only see a low fuel pressure log and so wont be able to determin if youv'e say high pressure problems[like pump or injectors] as that will chuck up faults till the low pressure problem is resolved . . . . .best oh luck :) :) :)

Isolated to in tank pump. 400 euros from main stealer, 200 euros from factors, these prices in euros and found cheaper 123 sterling on another site but need wheels quick. factors price just pump no sender et al but they all work anyway.

All working now. Back to real motoring after driving wifes almeira thank heavens. I now appreciate how good the old td is in comparison.
