lossing water....

hi all, ive recently purchased a 2000 discovery td5 and it seems to be losing some water! there is no water under it after ive parked and i cant find any leaks, bad news i take it!!

its about half a litre in 50-60 miles ish! the temp gauge has also started to move up and down a little either side of the norm also!

You sure theres none hitting the ground ?.

If not, its losing it internally, which isnt good.

Any frothy,ness in the oil filler cap ?.

there is no water getting in the oil!

Had much the same problem, there was in fact a leak in the radiator but because the rad was hot it was evaporating before hitting the ground, also where the leak was couldn't be seen.
You need to have the cooling system pressure checked to find out if that's where your leak is coming from.

thanks for that! i will have yet another look in the morning! lots of people seem to think its either the head cracked or head gasket going/gone!

Worth looking for a build up of dried antifreeze residue. That normally gives a nice tell tale sign.

I just found my leak the other day, which was on a V8 so probably a tad different on the cooling side. But that was on the throttle body pre heater, nice build up of crud around it and on the rocker cover. No sign of leaking water or steam when running just loosing 1/2 l every couple of weeks.

1- Have the system pressure tested and also note pressure at which pressure cap discharges fluid/air -- should be around 1.4 bar, if lesser replace pressure cap.

2- See the overflow pipe painted red in the picture. Place (and secure) a small plastic bottle to collect any potential overflow from the pressure cap. This could indicate head gasket failure.
