Hi All,
After a long spell away from being 'in-to' my cars, I'm hoping to make a come back with an immaculate Discovery 2 TD5 (if such a thing exists still!).

It will be my first 4x4 after a multitude of performance cars in my past years, and more recently to replace the 'motorway hacks' I've used to cover long commute distances.

Now based in our own home near the Peaks I'm looking for a vehicle more suited to the region.

Keep me posted if you have a properly mint Discovery TD5...

Cheers.

Will

Welcome.
I think you will struggle in your endeavours to find a properly mint Discovery.
Remember the youngest TD5 is 12 years old, you'll struggle to find one with less than 100k miles on it now.
The suffer very badly on the rear end for rust issues with the chassis.
If you really want a minter you may consider a Japanese import but they are all 4l petrol versions and cost around the 7k mark.
No rust on the chassis as they don't salt the roads in Japan
Good luck in your hunt

A Google search for Japanese import Discovery threw up this page amongst others

might be worth contacting @janderson41 he had a Jap import 300 Disco

Thanks for the replies gents. Yes I'd seen a couple of immaculate Jap V8s. It's a consideration, but the reliability of a V8 would be a worry, and parted with the LPG that it would probably need.

Seen a couple of Galv chassis replaced ones with higher mileage. And there are a number of 99/00 models available which I need to view - all well below 100k and priced accordingly.

Chassis rot is certainly the big consideration - am I right in thinking under the rear 'chassis legs' is the terminal point, but cross-members etc can be replaced?

Welcome @willhouse ,

When you are going to have a look at some.

This list may help you, contains a few of the things to check / look at on a D2.

Also, very worth while looking at the .gov MOT history checker when you find one you are interested in.

Cheers

I had a 51 plate (just sold) no welding and the chassis was fine, however had an 04 and the chassis was shot on the nearside rail both front and back, over the back axle and further back was the worst.
Remember to check the bits you don't see, the bits you can see are usually nice and shiny.
Here's the 04 project I had

Well what a great response to a first message on the forum!

Neilly that document is fantastic. I will be printing and using it next week!!!

There are 2 located near Poulton Le Fyde to check out, a 2000 and a 2001 I think, and an older 1999 in Carlisle, all at dealers, but better advertised than most. And all sub 100k.
There is a multitude of generically advertised models a little more locally to me in Manchester at various dealers - all advertised as 'stunning' or 'immaculate' but lacking decent specialist history.
I've also since been advised by a specialist that the earlier (10p?) TD5 is actually the more solid engine. Although I like the styling of both the facelift and preface lift Discoveries.

I already viewed a black low-mile Black Run-out TD5 near Holmfirth the other day, but it had been owned by an elderly gentleman, being sold by an arrogant dealer.
It had the stereotypical careful use of an older gent, but wasn't as clean as I'd have liked for the very high price - cracked rear lights, a load of tacky LED light additions and the ACE system present (I'm hoping for one without it)! But it was sunroof free...

Watch this space...

That is strange I always understood it was the opposite, the 15P engine was the stronger unit , due to having steel dowels aligning the head rather than plastic dowels. Will be interesting to see what others have to say. Will not be the first time I was mistaken....:p.

Good luck in your search.

Cheers

When I referred to the earlier engines being better, it was advice from a Landy specialist garage, but specifically in relation to the earlier heads being a little less susceptible to the cracked injector seats I think. Although yes - I'm a total novice so also happy to be corrected!!!
