I have a 1990 RR Classic. I replaced the alternator recently and
eveything has been fine. The other night after starting the vehicle I
noticed that the headlights were pulsating as were the ABS/engine light
on the dash panel. There is no hesitation in the engine and the
alternator belt is tight. I had the alternator tested and it is working
fine. This was not immediate after the replacement of the Alt., so I
believe there is another cause but I am unable to determine what it is.
I'd like some suggestions before I take it to a shop. Any help would
be appreciated.

Were there any lights in the sky at the time? Has your bottom been a
little sore recently?

Lock your doors.

I think you have to have parked on a level crossing with the signs
all shot up to qualify for the above. Or be looking for an excuse for
taking 4 hours to "give the barmaid a lift home".......

I've only seen it when the alternator had nearly worn out brushes. It
was still producing enough volts/amps to be passed 'working' though. If
it was a new alternator it might be a stuck brush.

Did you replace it with a *new* one and did it come with pulley. If not you
might not have tightened it enough, the modern tin pulleys don't have a
keyway in them. Otherwise regulator in alternator may be faulty, take it
back to test.

Thanks for the many suggestions. I realize that I know even less than I
thought I did after reading them. My automotive skills haven't
progressed much beyond repairing my Series III.

Thanks again.

I had exactly the same trouble with my RR. It was down to the alternator, it
was only a week old. I had to have the original one changed on holiday in
the Highlands by the LR dealer in Inverness after it was found to be
overcharging the battery on the drive up from the Midlands. It lasted a week
and started playing up and pulsating on the drive home. When back in
Solihull, I took it to Evans Halshaw on the Stratford Road and explained
that it was knackered and that it was fitted by a Land Rover Dealership in
Inverness, they told me that they had fitted the wrong type and that they
were not going to do anything about it, ****s. So I rang the Inverness
branch from the forecourt of the Solihull LR dealership and the Manager in
Inverness was first class and sorted out a replacement and fitting the same
day at the Lucas dealer in Aston, Birmingham.
The Evans Halshaw Dealership in Solihull, Stratford Road are a bunch of
tossers, in my opinion and my mothers. She wanted a Freelander, she knew
what she wanted and had the CASH on her. She went in to Evans Halshaw and
asked someone if she could look at the Freelander in the show room, she was
told that there was a 'Team Meeting' and there wasn't anybody to help her.
She just walked out and drove to the Droitwich dealer.
............... sorry, where was I, yes it was the alternator that had packed
up.
I seem to get a fair bit of trouble with the shop bought factory re-con
alternators.

It's odd, but here in Bradford/Leeds we have two dealers that are the same company in effect & I know
that staff interchange, but the Leeds one is MILES better than the Bradford one. I mean MILES better,
mainly due to the parts bloke who really gives one when you ask him for something. The ****ers in the
Bradford branch fecked me right off over buying a new Disco last year. Utter knobs to be avoided & if
anyone is watching - you are all ****e & need to sort your **** out.
