i am dreading the mess! i think i am going to line some baking trays with cling film to try and catch the grease, its only a day old!

cardboard is a good idea, and i happen to have loads of it knocking about.

thanks again for your help, i will report back once i have done it, it may help someone in the future

rite, i have just done the bar under the tyre test. and there is no movement i also just to be sure put my hands at 6 oclock and 12 oclock and tried to wiggle the wheel. and again nothing.

i did however get movement side to side as if the bearings were shot. these are new bearings i fitted inner and outer yesterday. when i got under the car and pushed the wheel i looked like it was enough to make the seal.

so my question is, could i have been a huge bell end and not tightened up the nuts that hold the bearings in enough? i wouldn't have thought they have any impact on the swivel housing though?? however the housing defo moves when i press side to side on the wheel.

Sorry to say I would not risk driving until you know what is wrong, its a risk to you and others, If the wheel bearing is loose it would have play both horizontal and vertical, it sounds more like the taper bearings in the swivel are loose i.e. not enough pre load, always best to have the weight off the wheel to check any play anywhere ( but be sure its safe)
Good luck sorting it out I bet it will be obvious what was wrong when you start to pull it apart.

Wheel bearings obviously need to be tight but that will have no effect on the swivel so you will most likley need to do the swivel bearings

As raywin says dont drive it till its sorted

yeah i have already made the decision to not drive it, this is an unknown ball and housing. so until i have got messy it looks like i am driving the misses smart car!

sorry i mean the bearings, i did what you did except with new ones, and a month down the road had to change the bearings as somehow doing the work knackered the bearings, the words one life live it mean live it under the thing i think lol, good luck

ahh lol yeah its getting that way, a while ago i used to have this thing at the end of the week......i think i called it a weekend, now i just go to my other job, fixing a car!

i have ordered the swivel bearing kit now so its off the road till that gets here. on the plus side, while i am not driving it nothing else can break!

yeh right lol and while its stood see if you find another oil drip that wasn't there before never ending, i had a fault a leak somewhere i just couldn't find anywhere, even if i got under the motor straight away, it was a new one after being stood a couple of week, drove me crazy, then i went to get the aircon regicide and guess what under pressure the low pressure pipe leaked right on the bend, what a bar steward.

Well did you manage to get it sorted? Hope it went well

hi yeah i was going to get to updating this at some point this weekend but your message has just give the kick to do it now while my battery drill charges.

it turned out to be a complete cock up, they guy that sold me the swivel ball from ebay got it wrong. but not 100% his fault and he was very helpful.

the swivel he sent was from an abs model but it had a none abs kingpin. someone had really butchered this thing to make it work. the bearing had also collapsed, maybe it would have worked if the bearing was ok? just a thought for anyone that may be stuck in the future.

i ended up buying a new one from paddoks for about 76 quid inc next day delivery so it wasnt to bad. got her back on the road last thursday decided to fit the 2" lift springs i have had for a while yesterday and snapped the rear upper shocker mount bolt! so she is back off the road till the new mount gets here! its one thing after the other but i kinda love it!

Ah well sounds like one of those learning experiences, just have to shrug and say all is well that ends well.
I heard the rear shock mounts are prone to shearing when they get rusty, but not yet had that one happen to me.

while i am not driving it nothing else can break!

hahaha.
I wish.

Don't chuck the chrome ball if it's alright, I think some of the serious off road guys really like them compared to the new coated ones.
