Hey guys!

My first post since introducing myself.

Just a quick one that I'm hoping someone will be able to point me in the right direction as I'm sure this is nothing to someone in the know.

Spotted a little bit of a leak! Total amateur as I'm new to all this stuff. Before my Freelander I couldn't of cared less about what goes on under the bonnet but am slowly starting to pick things up now I finally have a car I love and want to look after. (purchased a Haynes manual, get me :D).

So it seems to be coming from the short pipe that's leaking on to the one below it. TD4 model, 2003. What should I do? Should I be worried? :(

Huge thank you in advance!

Nothing to worry about. This routine will become second nature.
The leak is from the turbo hoses. Oil builds up in them over time.
Take the 90 degree hose off by loosening the screws on the jubilee clips. Silver things that go round the black pipes. Then pull the pipe off. The metal object on the left is the EGR valve, this will be full of crap, but maybe leave cleaning this fully until your more confident.
For now, wipe the pipe with an old cloth and dig any crud out of the EGR you can. You can't damage anything doing this.
Then put it back together.

Clean the whole engine with gunk or similar (paraffin will do )

The pipes should be all completely decreased (de-oiled)

Now, look for leaks - you do not say WHAT kind of leaks ??? if you mean pipes are coated in oil - then it could be - and most likely i - coming from external sources - so sort that first - ! the cleaning will enable you to to identify the source,

The hoses are very prone to degradation if coated in oil so check them out.
It looks like you have an oil leak that is contaminating the external surfaces.
Old adage - thoroughly clean, then monitor, then note where the problem is from - THEN start to diagnose and sort the problem.
Not a big deal to identify really - may be difficult to solve - but unlikely.

So far -all you have really said is that you have oil dripping / contaminating a hose or two - no worries - at this stage -

Methodological approach is the best - enjoy

:) Joe

Absolutely brilliant guys, thank you Arctic2, Skinny Mike and Joe_H ;):D Will head back out and pretend to look like I know what I'm doing for a while!

Edit: so I've taken the pipe off and given everything a good clean. Wow, can actually see the metal clip on the pipe below now. Think I've cleaned out the EGR valve as best as I can. The pipe itself seems to be okay so hopefully it was just a buildup of oil? I see why this can be quite fun now!

Edit 2: Okay sorted (hopefully). Happy Landy. Happy Owner!
(ps, that extra gunk you can see in the photo I got out afterwards).

Nice one mate.:)
The key to solving / helping diagnose most issues is to start with a clean area. Get 5ltrs of gunk (cheaper to buy in bulk) - or Jizer or any engine degreasant. Use a stiff paint brush or a degreasing brush and coat everything working it in where needed. Let it soak in for 15 mins or so. Then use a hose pipe to rinse it all off - voila - ! nice clean engine.. get it everywhere and don't worry about the water.
Most rally / race engines are painted with a light colour so you can see issues starting asap. When as clean as you can make it, it also makes working on it far more enjoyable.
Enjoy ;)
