I totally agree with them, in fact why don't we get rid of the uk forces and
just hire some chinese or african regiments . They probably work for
peanuts. Better still why don't we get rid of the british and replace them
with other nationals. Blimey I'm good at this !! ( Damn just had a thought,
Tony, Ken and the rest have already thought of that one ! )

The most worring thing about the Army wanting to ditch the Defender bacuase
it cannot cope with situations like Iraq is that they're obviously keying up
to more situations like iraq in the future .(Watch this space N. Korea)
Shouldnt it be the ditching of military (or even political)
decisions that lead our army into situations that they cannot cope with ?

I can't believe that a series landie could not cope with Iraq they coped
with worse. I guess a model T fordcould cope with Iraq (and probably did) so
can donkeys as it happens, they don't run out of gas at least just fart it.

Never mind landies not coping with Iraq seems the army can't either.

Interesting, but some of the reasons given to consider Daimler Chrysler
vehicles, one supplier, worldwide support, etc surely would work for Ford
too.

Well they ditched the 101 for foriegn trucks .. which incidentally I'm led
to beleive are now built in the south of England if the lads at work are
correct... will do some more digging.

Steyr-Puch Pinzgauers, ain't they?

handy looking gadget, I have to admit, but it doesn't have the appeal of the
101.

and what about Stonefield? are they still in business? dead-neat
space-frame 4x4 and 6x4 trucks.

this lot:

http://www.ebroadcast.com.au/ecars/Stonefield/Stonefield.html

say it ain't. pity.

site's quite intersting mind. details on all kinds of stuff, including
pinzgauers and RB44s.

Hmm. 6x6 pinzgauer looks quite nice, I could quite fancy one of those.

Pinzgauers are definitely built in Guildford, in the industrial estate
opposite side of the A3 from the Wooden Bridge pub, right next to the main
rail line to London, for those that know the place. Been there at least a
couple of years now.

That must be the site of the old Dennis works. (Dennis of specialist vehicle
fame, buses, dustcarts, fire engines)

ACTUALLY, on our Ambi, there is an elliptical shaped hole on the front
of the ambi box, near the nearside door that looks exactly like a bullet
hole.

The Reynolds Boughton RB44 was supposed to the replacement for the 101
but is widely regarded as useless, hence the 101 staying in service
for longer that intended until the 127 and Pinzgauers came into use.
(127s now gone as Rapier FSC needs a 4 tonner)

All Pinzgauer production is now in the UK although the original design
is Austrian and 25 years old, lots of continual development keeps it
right up to date. The new Bowman radio system is too big to fit in
Land Rovers so another Pinzgauer order is likely.

The Stonefield was another one of those 80's government sponsered
enterprise schemes that would be a great success and provide loads of
employment - NOT.
Started in Scotland, ended up in Medway and the only ones mug enough
to buy them in quantity was the Malaysians who bought 400. Died around
1990 I think. Used American mechanical bits in a space frame chassis.

Sounds like it, though John Dennis continued building buses and fire
engines down the road at Slyfield.

I have recently seen 6 wheel pinzgauers running around locally. First
time I have come across them since one of the arctic expeditions in
1972.
