Landy dilemma

Currently suffering a real dilemma, after a couple of years away from the marque I'm looking to change from my Golf GTi, after getting stung by an unscrupulous garage when I had my Disco's brakes replaced I'm wary of buying a money pit but would dearly love a Disco1 or a Freelander1, I'm well aware of the Disco's weak points with regard to corrosion but is it possible in your opinions to find a good one for around the 1500 mark?, and with the Freelander there are many reported problem areas, I'd be looking for a diesel and would it be better to get an earlier one which may have already had the problems sorted?.
Any advice welcomed.

The 300TDI is a good motor as long as you look out for the usual rust problems and should serve you well, if your not confident take someone with you that is, £1500 should get you a pretty good one, in fact your not that far from me so if you need a hand give me a shout ok
