Went to watch my first land rover trial today. I didn't know how capable a standard land rover was :-0 however I don't understand the need to winch the vehicle into stupid places to get the punch. Not interested in participating but more than happy to watch .

However, isn't there a trial for stock vehicles without all the fancy stuff going on - Road Trial Vehicle or some such?Many years ago before I got a Disco 2, one of the best days I ever had with my trousers on
was playing navigator for a mate in his series 2 on a trial day organised by Red Rose Land Rover Club. AWESOME day even when I had to reach down from inside the back door into mucky water to attach a rope to the rear shackle to get us out of the mire (She fired up just fine again after we'd got her recovered and had a brew!)

I believe RTV = Road Taxed Vehicle but I could be wrong...

I suspect the event you watched was a challenge event and not a trial, trialers don't use winches, they drive around courses between gates without stopping or touching the gates.
A RTV trial is for road legal vehicles and CCV or cross country vehicle trials are more serious affairs in which most vehicles are not road legal.
