Now, i don't HAVE a 2.5 turbo, but I've heard rumors that they were slightly unreliable.. from what i understood, people have been saying that the turbo pushes in quite a bit of oil, damaging the cylinders, leading to a loss of compression. This could be BS, this could be true. I don't see why it would not be true, but can anyone confirm this? i heard about this on a different post, and I've been wondering about it ever since. But i just wanna be sure. What do you guys think? Were they just 2.5 N/A's fitted with turbos? or were they redesigned? if it was just a 2.5 N/A, were they just not optimized?

Loads of posts on this - try the 19j forum. My reading of it is that the engine is very similar to the NA, and the turbo heat stressed it a bit. When looked after all is OK, but if the cooling system is not up to scratch, overheating problems occur. later engines have different valves to cope with the extra heat. All of this IMHO.

FOUND WHAT I SAW BEFORE:
The 2.5N/A that it was built on is on the whole a brilliant engine, then LR made a mistake of putting the turbo onto it without doing anything more to the engine itself. This lead to problems such as internal cracks developing in the cylinder block, the breather is not that well designed leading to oil contaminating the air filter and then being drawn into the engine letting it run away.

The later ones did have a strengthed head so you may have one of these.

If you don't trash your engine it will do the job; you could even turn the turbo back a tiny bit so its more like a 2.5N/A with the added fuel economy because of the better combustion.
