Afternoon All,

This is my first post so be nice! Haha.

I acquired a Land Rover 90 (1987) this weekend and drove it home yesterday for the first time (approx 120miles). Parked it and all seemed fine. Came back out half an hour later to go out, engine turned on fine, handbrake off, slipped it into reserve (clutch felt fine and no grinding), engaged the clutch but it wouldn’t move (there was no sign it was even trying to move). Tried the same process several times but nothing. I am able to push the LR by hand in neutral so the brakes aren't sticking. Tried all the forward gears but still nothing, regardless of how much throttle you apply. The diff lock is in the neutral position don’t think it is that. There are also no obvious leaks or anything hanging off the bottom of the LR.

Any idea what could have happened in the 30 minute period? I know the description isn’t great but any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Conor

The diff lock is in the neutral position
Sounds like you have knocked the transfer box into neutral. Side to side for diff lock, front to back for high/low. Try holding the lever back as you slowly release the clutch and it should drop in

When I bought my last Disco, on the way home with it, it suddenly leapt into neutral in the transfer box. Couldn't see it, thought the autobox had given up. Even called out recovery, who couldn't find me. While waiting for them I suddenly thought the Hi-lo lever was looking a bit vertical, so tried it out and sho nuff, it had done wot i sed. Back in hi range and off I went. has never done it since!

I had a similar problem back in May last year where I lost drive no matter what gear I was in in either box. It turned out the clutch had given up. The centre splined piece in the middle of the friction plate had come loose. It only appeared to be staked in.
