hi everyone,:)
been awhile since i posted out but here goes, car passed mot 2 weeks ago and everything was fine till last week.i notice going round corners car has a knocking sound on steering lock weather it was left or right turn.anyway to day i had to use diff lock as i was stuck in snow on ice and no probs and it disenaged fine aswell.so could this be me cv joint.anyway iv lifted wheel off ground and it spins fine as in no grinding but there is lot of movement form top to bottom left to right so now im thinking wheel bearings here.now if the cv joint is worn would this cause the play i have in the wheel or is it bearing s aswell. and last question if it is cv joint how can i tell if its 10 spline or 24 so i can order parts .
many thanks in advance

this sounds like a wheel bearing problem if you have play in the wheel! the 300tdi are usually 24 spline unless someone has changed them but if you give your supplier your chassis number they can determine which cv joints you need.

If you're taking it all apart to check it, I'd replace CVs and wheel bearings anyway - it aint that spensive compared to the time it takes.

hi

is there away of checking if the cv joint is worn when the car is stationary
thanks again

Not that I know of.
"Clicking" or "knocking" on full-lock is a symptom of worn CVs.
Movement in the wheel up/down side/side is a symptom of worn wheel bearings or swivel bearings.

hi there :)
should this of been picked up on the mot i had 2 weeks ago even then there was no adveriess neither on the front end even then iv only done 70 miles roughly since

I had a similar problem on my rangerover classic before christmas, clunking through the steering and when i jacked up the o/s/f wheel there was up and down movement in the hub area, turned out to be the top swivel bearing worn away.

hi all
swivel bearings you say to, would it be advisery then to change these at the same time as a cv joint.also can these be changed with the big ball inplace on axle
many thanks again for repleys
