Once again I have to say that the wealth of info and good advice on this forum is amazing...
I have now put a decent battery in, fully charged. It is now so much easier starting, the difference is almost unbelievable. Even tho' it cranked over ok (most of the time) with the old battery it was often sluggish to start. With the new battery in it seems to turn over just once and fire up straight away. A great improvement. Apparently it really does need a good bit of battery power for the 2.5 DT to start properly.
It gets better... a key fob I had written off as knackered now synchronizes and works again. I'll get a new pad for it and everything is hunky dory! So thanks all for your good advice.
Pip pip!
