Yes I must be mad but decided to take the plunge and buy a p38 2.5dt. R reg 125k miles with FSH but showing its age and requires a few bits and bobs.

Air suspension removed by previous owner  and replaced with terrafirma kit which drives suprisingly nice:). Just brought terrafirma steering damper to go on as old unit is shot.

Body work not too bad though.

sills all ok.
Floors ok.
Rust behind rear bumper but in the process of trying to remove bumper to sort rust out. and then waxoil it all to death.(2 E16 bolts rusted, will try and drill out tomorrow) One side bumper bracket rusted away completely. 1/2 tonne mud hiding behind bumper.

Engine seems fine but running cool.

Will order thermostat from landrover (or is there a good aftermarket one thats worth putting in? )

Waterpump - will mine have plastic impellor or metal one? 1998. Can i check or find out without pulling the pump?

Electrics - all seem ok but today had car running whilst removing side steps and plastic sill covers to examine for rust. Went to get in th ecar and doors had locked with key in the ignition and engine running.......ARRRCGGHHHH. Luckily the passenger door didnt lock so managed to get in. (Anyone know why this would happen or how to stop it happening again.)

Anyone got any plastic wheel arch trims they dont want as I really like them..

New wheels and tyres ordered and on the way.

Service kit here awaiting to do after rust sorted and wax oiled.

Anyone recommend best oil for gearbox, transfer box and diffs. Would like a good synthetic in there if poss.

Once all thats done may look to have good quality respray and then onto the interior.

Of the joy..

Still be nice when its finished and at least it will keep another p38 on the road. Far too many being scrapped.

welcome back and congrats on rescuing another of the last real Range Rovers from the breakers in the sky !

Dexron II or III for auto box and transfer box plus a dose of Lucas transmission fix in the auto box would not go amiss plus the filter, don't mess with different oils or you will end up in trouble.
Never leave the key in the car unless you have opened a window.
Door not locking could be the motor fried.
Running cool sounds like the stat has been removed to mask a problem, could be the viscous fan is shot, RAD silted up or water pump on it's way out. Lots of poor stats around, check the new one in boiling water before you fit it.
:welcome: Back, shame about the springs.
