Hello,
I've got a 1988 Landrover 90 with a 200tdi engine.

Recently I've been having some issues with my reverse gear where it jumps and clunks about when moving with wither the clutch up or down.

I end up having to reverse incredibly slowly otherwise it feels like something is going to go horribly wrong.

Everything is fine in forward gears though.

I haven't been under the car in a few weeks, but when I did, all the u joints looked ok. Could this be the vcu?

I'm also thinking there might be a bit more play than usual between the engine and the wheels (Although it might not actually be that bad, I could just be over-thinking it).

Thanks in advance, any help appreciated massively.

I would start by having a peek at your handbrake drum first, take it for a drive and when you get home have a feel of the drum if its warm its dragging.
There could be loads of other things wrong or need adjusting, but this check is quick and easy.

Whereabouts roughly in Kent?

My first thoughts went to the hand brake drum as well.

^^ what they said. Remove the drum and have a look at the shoes and mechanism. make sure the springs are fitted correctly and everything is clean and lubricated.

You don't have a VCU on your vehicle, so no worries there. I'd check hand brake drum first too.
