5 years ago my lovely gold Disco TD5 shuffled off this mortal coil.
I slipped into my ‘wilderness years’ that led from bright sunlit uplands to places darkened by the lights of perverted science,
I bought a Peugeot.
For 3 years I drove round in mediocrity and shame, hoping for a friendly wave, but had to resort to wearing a bag on my head to avoid the mocking looks.
Then in a moment of divine madness, I bought an Alfa Romeo Giulietta.
The ‘grin’ returned.
The camaraderie was coming back. The waves, the smiles, the knowing nods, and the delight that I was driving a car that had flair and style.
But it couldn’t do what a Landy does.
A change of lifestyle was on the horizon that needed a 4x4.
But not just any 4x4, a Defender.
Bye bye, sweet Giulietta!
Our affair was brief, but sensual and fun.
A tear was in my eye as I watched your sweet curvy Italian rear head up the road, with a cheeky snarl from the exhaust, as you headed off with a new younger owner.
Now I welcome Dave the Defender 90 pick up.
He will be my faithful chum as we chug through the hills together; both of us have plenty of miles on the clock, we both cough and fart first thing in the morning, and have the scars of various battles with life on our bodies and souls.
We’ll encounter muddy lanes, fallen trees, things that need shifting; we’ll assess them and tackle them together.
Yeah, it’s good to be back.
