Hello all,
I've been try to wrap my head around this all weekend..
I have rewired all the indicators and earthed them all to the chassis so I know personally that at every corner everything is OK (triple checked). I uploaded my work and I know that the grounds in the rear seem shady but I've rewired them all the way down to the chassis and i've cleaned up the front ones.
First problem I was having was the hazard lights would stick the relay on and off very rapidly. The indicators still worked but seemed to be drawing a lot of current as it would drop the battery about 2 volts. Seems like a bit much.
Next, without messing with anything the indicators blew their fuse followed by the hazard doing the same.
That's where I'm at now.
I've isolated all the turn signals wires from the hazard, steering wheel, flasher relay and indicator warning dash light. All wires when tested are grounded!! I may not be a wiring wiz but something tells me that's not right.
My question to you guys is what and where do I check for shorts. There was a time when the hazard was giving me problems the green wire got damn hot. I believe it was the one to the flasher relay.
BTW, the flasher relay works because I have my alarm wired to it and it works perfectly (flashing all lights) through the hazard switch so I think that emilminates anything beyond the switch leading to the lights themselves.
I just replaced the hazard switch because the original one would fry the fuse when I'd turn it on and push it inward. (it was old) I. E. It wouldn't make the connection unless I pushed on it after I switched it on.

I know this is extensive, but any troubleshooting ideas would be greatly appreciated. If you guys want a video I can make one tomorrow.

I have uploaded the wiring diagram to aid. 2.5 petrol 86 defender.

If you have a multimeter, you can check the wiring back to each corner: Unplug the main wiring loom under the bonnet, then measure the resistance between each indicator side (bulb out) and earth at the loom side of the plug. If all is OK - ie very high resistance to earth, then you have eliminated an earth fault from the body wiring. Leaving the body loom unplugged, repeat at the plug behind the hazard switch, with the dash telltale bulb out - this will look for earths in the internal wiring. Sometimes the chassis earths between the battery and chassis cause problems, it may be worth running a new heavy earth wire, to the chassis.
