What vehicle and year is it?
Have you noticed the lock becoming 'notchy' when you put the key in ?
It does sound like someone had tried to pop it, or when a previous owner had it ...

You can take the barrel out, about 1/2 hour, buy 4 new sacrificial bolts, quick trip to a locksmith that does autolocks, about £40, and re-fit ... same keys, you can have new ones cut too...
