Hi folks
i am now the proud owner of an 'A' reg land rover range rover 3.5 but i
have a problem the ignition light came on yesterday and remained on even
when the key was removed, this morning guess what a flat battery.
i have recharged the battery and it is holding its charge
but i am conserned as to the possible cause for the light
to remain on. The "Beast" starts no problem and
was running find except for the light remaining on.
any pointers as to what to check would be greatly
appreciated.

dave

One or more diodes in the alternator has gone short circuit most likely,
allowing volts back through the alternator to the vehicle via the excitation
circuit. Replace or re-con the alternator and all will be fine.

assuming the diodes are all in the regulator/brush pack you can
replace just that on an alternator.
I just did the one on my car and it cost around £15 from the local
bosch specialist.
I was impressed - Cost me about £20 for new regulator/brushes and the
2 bearings which compares well with the cost of a full recon
replacement.

Ok folks
have just checked the alternator and several other things as per the haynes
manual and it looks like the amplifer is at fault does anyone know how much
these things cost best place to buy ie can i pick it up at my local motor
mart.
