Right then... as the title sugests I WANA DEFENDER! Ive had enough of my mechanicaly sound disco (sort of) running gear sitting in a shell with patch upon patch of welding. Im going to have a poke around a 1986 110 csw 2.5n/a diesel 12 seater tommorow and wondered the following things. 1) Is there any way of telling if its a genuine csw? Should it say on the V5? 2) Other than bulk head corners and chassis rot what else should I pay attention to. It has 6 months mot and the options list is as follows...... power steering and towbar:D The chaps asking £1500 sound any good or am I mad??????

Im aware that people do 200tdi engine swops on the defenders but didn't know if this age vehicle had the same engine mounts and compatable gearbox as the later ones? Would the 300tdi out me disco drop in? The disco has the r380 box as well.

Yes it will fit no it won't just drop in. The front n/s mount is different on a 300tdi but the exhaust doesn't have to be messed about with. and the turbo is in the same place as the defenders. So in some respects it's easier to fit a 300tdi than it is to fit a 200tdi. Last week I saw a 110 CSW with a 300TDi mated to a LT77 gearbox, So anything is possible.

That good is it Pete:D The Disco aint as bad as Ive said its just that every time I do somat to it that needs fixing at least one other thing suddenly stops working. Its cold and crappy out side and I seem to spend most of my time frozen to a ratchet... just fed up. Good thing about the defender is the body shell dont melt as bad as the disco and when a bit does go on the defender you unbolt it cut a new bit of ali plate and bolt it back in.

Best thing about defenders is that they are really easy to work on, even I can do it, and as Disco inferno said, it all just bolts together. All you need is WD40 and duck tape, if it moves and it shouldnt, use the tape, if it doesnt move and it should, use the WD40.....easy !!
