Hello all.

Before i get slagged off, and it's all been done before. I have done a search on the subject.

Try it. It will leave you confused.

The hand book gives all sorts of options, but no real reasons why to use this or that oil.

I would like an up to date take on the subject for a TD4 03 plate with 85,000 on the clock. Which i intend to keep and well serviced.

Advice on best filters to use (standard) and the importance of changing the three 'O' ring in the oil filter housing if there is any.

I'm sure they must serve some purpose. If so where can you get them from?

I use 5/40 fully synthetic engine oil , have used LR oil filter at £13.00 odd :eek: now use after market filter at £4.00 , with no quality difference noticable , enquired at LR dealer re oil filter plastic housing O rings , told would have to purchase the full part , but never had to change mine as yet :)
 
I'm using Castrol 5w-30 fully synthetic LL04
Why? - This is the current BMW spec.
I buy it when Halfrauds have it on special offer.

Filters I only use Mahle or Mann as they are the OE suppliers - and I don't want to pay twice the price just to get it in a LR box.

I also would have like the extra little 'O'-rings to be included in the filter box.

I replaced them once and have a spare set, but I feel that they are not under any great pressure and if they look OK I'm just leaving them.
 
Did use 10W40 Castrol GTX then Magnatec semi-synthetic. But having just had my turbo blow (ran away engine etc) an oil change was done as part of the warranty for the new turbo. It's now on Comma Xtech fully synthetic 5W30 and I think the old girl is running a bit smoother. 107k miles on 53 plate.
It's just been done, so I'll keep my eye on it.
 
I use Castrol Magnatec C3 5W30 Fully Synthetic - i'm a big fan of Magnatec and oil is one thing i try not to cut corners on :D It keeps my engine happy.

This is what I use Quantum Syntra Z 5w-30. The guy who has serviced my car for the last four years is an ex audi trained mechanic and say's this is what Audi use in there cars.

I've just bought 10L for my forthcoming service any day now. I got it from a local Audi dealer for about £33 for the 10L

This is the oil:

FORD ENGINE OIL- 5W30 ENGINE OIL -GENUINE QUANTUM SYNTA Z ENGINE OIL - 5 LITRE | eBay

make sure you check the a3/b3 numbers are met as this is far more important

i've been using gm dexos 2 5w/30 fully synth which matches all specs and is 20 quid for 5 litres at any vauxhall dealer

How many miles is synth good for?

The reason i ask is ..

I need a filter to do the same work over the same time, if you know what i mean.

Change my engine oil and filter every 12 months and use fully synthetic. I only do 3000 miles per year but its mostly only short trips.

Actually Nick, I think I do about the same miles as yourself - mostly.

With the exception that twice a year I do around 5000 miles in a month.

It's a crazy month as well - 2200 miles in 4 days, then only 40 or 50 miles a day for 3 weeks - then a 2200 return trip home.

I've been doing this for over 20 years - used to be 4 times a year though.

The Freelander (like me) is getting a little long in the tooth for this treatment - but I don't know of a suitable replacement.

When I get another vehicle the Freelander will be kept on for local work - retired to something a bit like the 'Retirement Home for Horses'.

I might land up in a 'Donkey Sanctuary' myself. :p :rolleyes: ;)

Stick with the 5w-30 LL04 (low ash) or 5w-40 LL01 synthetic oil that BMW recommend for the 320D

remember to always change the breather valve filter (looks like a cotton reel) and the turbo vent filter every service as recommended by land rover

You can get the "O" rings from Halfords, about £7 for a small box with an assortment of sizes.

So it looks like fully synth gets the vote.
