I find a bit of diesel is as good as anything else and a lot cheaper.

Yeah, anything that has low viscosity, and mixing it with an acid that reacts with the iron oxides will do. Don't have unlimited budget for this and would rather prefer spending the money on quality parts rather than excessively expensive commercial stuff.

If it's really stuck forget WD40 it's mainly water displacer - okay instead of nothing. Try plusgas it's amazing as is dedicated penetrator spray and not expensive and let it soak. You don't want to snap anything off if possible
Plusgas yes, I used it 40 years ago good stuff

Right, there's not much rust, except the rear bumper that will need to be fixed, but the foot wells, bulkhead, they are all fine. Anyway, I don't have the knowledge, tools, nor the skill to take on a big restoration project like some of the people here do.
Get it running first (it's all worth it then). Just do little bit at a time and select what is needed most first. Everybody with 50yrs experience started somewhere, plus you have all the knowledge and help on here of the people that already do ;)

That was what I did when I got mine. I fixed the immediate problems to make it drivable and safe first, then my plan was to tackle the look of the thing but actually I became quite fond of its shabby appearance. I'm not knocking anyone who has restored an old landy back to showroom condition, they look great but if I did that to mine, I'd be scared to use it.

My cars have always gleamed, but all my landys have had a 'distinct character' to them. :p:D

It's not just us, no one waves to the shiny cars, but discos, RR's, defenders, the odd freelanderer even tratters wave to me in a beaten up LR - they don't know me it's just the truck?
all worth it though when you see a child get all excited and waving when they see you pass :)
