How to stop the crankshaft pulley spinning?

So if i extend the cable from the spade connector to the + on the battery and then short the starter it will turn the crank?

dizzy where is this spade connector? ive just been out and there are 2 spade connectors next to each other, those are the 2 that i am shorting together to get it to spin but where do i need to run a 12v feed to on the starter?

If you put power to the spade connector ( only 1 on my starter ) it will energise starter and engage and turn starter, can't understand wy it's not turning engine over/ front pulley not turning ?
Thought you was shorting across the nuts to put power to the motor, when solenoid is triggered it engages the starter gear into flywheel starter ring and also connects the main power to the motor

If the nuts that tight I would of thought the starter probably wouldn't undo it.
One small point. Are you sure the starter is going to turn the right way to undo the nut and not tighten it up?

I got it undone, i found the small spade connector that you were talking about dizzytim thanks a lot, it is tucked to the side of the nuts..

it went straight away with a quick turn over by that, it was a snapped timing belt, I've changed the belt and it had only bend 5 pushrods, I've changed all 8 and couldn't get off the awkward crank cog that has the teeth on it, but there is no oil coming from the seal and the cog itself looks fine..

I just need to double check the timing for the camshaft pulley is correct so ill be searching around for info on that tonight, on my camshaft pulley i have a small dot on the pulley itself, no other markings.

Camshaft dot lines up with a casting on the cover at about 20 to the hour if I remember, there is a good guide if you google it

if you line all that up in the timing case why do you have to check the flywheel on the underside? hmm

Flywheel check is to get it spot on, line on crank could be a few degrees out

nice one cheers, ill have a quick look under sunday as thats my next day off where i can look in daylight.. damn winter!!!
