Hi,

My engine is missing and smoking on startup. I've cleaned the oil out the air filter and ran some injector cleaner through it, but am thinking from reading a few things, advancing the injector timing might help ever so slightly. How do I go about this?

Please explain in layman terms!

Cheers

A bit of 'lumpy' running is fairly normal for a 19J until it's got a bit of temperature. White smoke is incomplete combustion- caused by the cold engine block drawing away the heat of compression. If it settles down in normal running I wouldn't worry about it.

Righto, it also has a puff of black when it starts.

to be perfectly honest it is a large amount of white smoke and the air filter is clagged in oil which I read is common.

cheers

I'm running some injector cleaner in the tank now, I've noticed it is a tiny bit less smoky on startup, but I think that's more down to me leaning on the glow plug for longer and not touching the throttle anymore.

Just to clarify, once on the move and up to temp, no smoke whatsoever.

Could be that one or two of the glow plugs have failed. The engine will still start as the remaining plugs are good, but will run roughly for a short time until the affected cylinders catch.

If the engine is a real heavy breather you need to sort this as the engine can run on the oil vapour and run away.
Reroute the breather pipe to atmosphere, remember if you go wading etc to put it back where it belongs first!
To advance the timing you need to turn the inj pump pulley anti clockwise a mm or two at a time until you are happy.
Ive never touched a 19j so cant be more precise.

Don't!

Not until you have checked all the things that are much more likely to be causing the problem, glows, tappets, air filter, fuel filter.

It is pretty normal for old diesels to smoke a bit on startup, and run roughish for a minute or two. If it runs ok when hot, and passes emissions, leave well alone, except for the service items as above.

That isn't how you adjust the pump! ;) What you actually do is loosen the pump flange bolts and turn the pump a fraction, the pulley stays stationary. You should insert the timing tool in flywheel and pump aperture to set it, although on an old worn engine trial and error may work best.

I have never heard of water being sucked into a crankcase breather, although it is fairly common with axles. Crankcase breather will tend to have positive pressure, which will prevent water ingress.
