Hi All,

My coil sprung trials machine has lunched it's rear diff. How do I
identify it to get a new one? It's 12 spline and has 46 teeth on the
crownwheel and 13 on the pinion, which makes it a 3.53? I've got
various vehicles laying around so if I knew which vehicle it came from
I can get a new 'un.

Hope someone can help.

Do you know if it's a rover or Sailsbury, front or rear? If it's front I'd
guess rover.... if it's rear could be either.

If it's a rear one and rover then I'd consider a sailsbury axle for the rear
assuming it's a 90 it should be a bolt on job with a modded prop. If it's a
Series then you'll be looking for a Stage 1 rear axle, have to move the
spring pads in and add a modded (shortened prop). The only trouble with
leaving it as a rover item on a trials machine is it'll only be a matter of
time before you have to do it all again.

Sorry Lee,

I wasn't really clear enough. It's a rover one alright. Front and rear
diffs are the same aren't they(?)

I just need to find out what Land Rover they were a standard fitment on
so I can put a new one in. If i remember rightly, different vehicles
had different ratios in them. I seem to remember that 12 splines were
the same as the old series vehicles, can't remember,

Any ideas?

No no no! Don't put a Sailsbury in the back of a trials motor......
the diff is that much bigger it will get you stuck in ruts and
hit rocks when you shouldn't, as I found out when I tried it :-(

They might be stronger, but it will cost you points.

Don't worry, i'm not into changing axles and stuff, I just want it to
have 4 wheel drive!

Apart from not being ARC legal, the 35-mile turning circle can
be viewed as a slight diasadvantage.......

Since no-one else has answered the original question, I'm pretty sure that
3.54 diffs were standard on all 90, RRCs and Disco 1s. I'm sure you have
more than one of them lying about somewhere!

I don't approve of signatures, so I don't have one.

Cheers Rich, you know who your mates are on here don't you (sniff) I'll
rob one out of the ol' disco. Front ones are buggers to get out though,
i might buy one instead!

How were the gear ratios changed then? Transfer box is it?

True. All the series motors are 4.7 except the Stage I V8. All
3.5 diffs are interchangeable (except Sailsbury's of course),
with the proviso that later vehicles have fine spline half-shafts.

Think so. I know the Discos/RRs had a "taller" tbox ratio than the 90/110
(the ratio 1:1.222 comes to mind).

Yep. there's one about 1.4 and one about 1.6 - the latter was early 110s.
