How do I fit olives??

Right then, 98 300tdi.

T'other week the fuel lift pump went and started ****ing fuel on the floor, field repair done and the hose from the tank to the lift pump and the one from the lift pump to the fuel filter were connecting using a bit of pipe and some jubilee clips.

I have a new lift pump but it didn't come with olives and nuts.

I now have them and haven't a scooby what to do. I just presumed the olives would be prepared with flux or solder or something on the inside so I'd just slide the nut on, slide the olive to where I want it and put the blow lamp on it to attach.

So am I in the right area?? Do I slide the nut onto the shaft, then the olive and then??????????? I have some flux and some solder but no clue..

its for gas but you should get the idea it works the same way...

I would point out that once an olive is crushed its not comming off the pipe & therefore if you need to replace the olive, you will therefore be replacing the pipe as well. (or cutting it shorter if it will still fit)

I dont even have a clue on what you are going on about... olive and nuts? you sure you aren't in the kitchen?

When fitting olives it's best to compress it onto the pipe using another end if you have one that you dont need, in the case of some applications the threads are fairly fragile and easily pulled out with the force needed to compress it fully onto the pipe. For example I have see pumps fooked by tightening too much and the opposite where the bastid blows off because its not compressed enough. In the case of plastic pipes some are thin wall and require an insert pushed into the pipe before fitting the olive.

If you want an olive off just cut a slot in it and then split it with a screwdriver with a twist. Dont use thread tape on fuel systems either, it gets into the unfiltered bit of the pump most times.
 
Cheers, went on no probs.

The only issue I had was following this when I tried to put the new fuel return pipe on... Only to fins that I needed.. You guessed it, a nut and olive.. And it wasn't provided with the return pipe..
