how bad is it???

hello chaps,
just thort i would ask if anyone could shed any light on my disco? i went to a pay n play today around 40mins away on the motorway, when i arrived i left the motor running and jumped out for 2mins, it over heated and cut out.

if i start the car (even now it is cold) with all the caps on the rad and the header tank, is ok for about 5 secs or so then water ****es out of the header tank cap. if i take out the cap out of the top of the rad and do it agen it seems to run fine but smoke comes out of the cap, it smells like exhaust fumes rather than just steam.

compresion test got to be one of first checks assuming no water in oil to show prob ps what model petrol or derv ?

300tdi, there doesnt seem to be any water in the oil ether its going to the garage mid week i just thort i would try to get an idea of the extent or the damage. thanks

without looking hard to say, but probably head gasket. Price for this job can vary a lot ,make sure its a garage you can trust thiers a lot of crap ones out there.

ok thanks for that a couple of people at the quary said that today that it might be the head gasket, there is a local landy specialists that have always been good for me so i will take it down this week, thanks for the reply

Did you check the condition of the thermostat? Sometimes if you turn the heater on full blast you can temporarily compensate for water not running through the radiator.

my money is on the head gasket, use a ELRING one when you replace it, it's the genuine part.

almost certainly a head gasket and probably a warped head if it got hot enough to just 'stop'.
