Background

Back in the summer, my 1986 efi Rangie spat out its water pump. Up
till then it had run quite cool, I suppose temp gauge was about 40% of
the way over, even when towing.

Since changing the water pump, gauge has read much higher, generally
only just out of the red, but very steady, and outside temperature and
sticking a 2 tonne boat on the back don't seem to effect gauge reading
very much.

Seems to me it could be:

1) Airlock
2) Thermostat (but why only after changing water pump? Coincidence?)
3) Duff gauge (but see 2)
4) Duff water pump (though heater blows warm, and I would have thought
if the pump wasn't pumping, the heater would be cold).
5) Blocked rad (but see 2)

Any thought as to how you would start trouble shooting? If I unscrew
the slotted filler plug on the top of the rad, and run the engine,
there isn't a lot of activity visible in the water at the top of the
rad. I expected a lot of swirling and gurgling. Blocked thermostat
possibly?

Thought appreciated.

When it dropped the pump the thermostat may bell have got a bit hot and
is now not working correctly. As a matter of course I change the
thermostat when I do a water pump on anything that could copnceivably
have got hot when the pump failed.
