I paid £1000 for my 96 disco about 16 months ago. since then I've put another £2350 into it with upgrades,rebuilt engine and replacing worn out parts. Will I ever see that money again in short no. But I knew this when spending the money. Don't worry about what you have spent and just enjoy the old girl.

Only car I ever made money on was my first Landy - Series 3 V8 - bought for £1500 & sold 1 year later for £2400!
Never since and probably never will again - but generally once they get to this age, they haven't got far to fall, compared to 'normal' family cars, which depreciate much quicker.
If its basically sound, get it sorted and keep it.

That's exactly the point, how many people buy a brand new motor and lose five grand on it in the first year, even with everything I've spent on mine and buying it I'm not five grand in three years.

I bought a fully loaded twin turbo 93 Toyota Lexus Soarer once, new it cost about £90,000 apparently, which was more than my house was worth at that time and I bought it in 2007 or so for £3,104 when it had done 86k miles that's a depreciation of more than £1 per mile
I don't think any Landy would lose that much cash

If keeping for a long time the price you paid will be pretty irrelevant divided by the years kept.
Ie 2k and 10 years = 4 quid per week!
Tbh if you can keep a 300 tdi going and road legal until 2028 without spending a LOT more than the purchase price I and many others will be mega impressed and you will attain holy grail status

Just wondering as I have owned my Discovery for over 5yrs and it ain't going anywhere soon either!
But the OP certainly over paid, but an early 300Tdi in good order and kept original will only rise in value.
