hi all, got a 2a with 2.25 petrol, not smoking but low compression on all four pots...125psi...shud be 160. how easy is it to re-ring and hone? is it a head off job or from underside?

cheers steve

what make you think its the rings
the compresion isnt that far down although it does need sorting and if its not smoking i wouldnt just rering it
but as an answer to the question yes it is head off and sump off
you will need to release the con-rods from the crank by spliting there bearing and then push the piston and rod you through the top
clean and hone down then refit pistons with new ring setting the ring gap at equal intervals around the piston
trouble is with doing it all in the engine bay is when you come to clean all the fluid/hone solution away
the last thig you want if for some of that slim with metal getting in the crank as it will rip the bearings to hell and score the crank jernols in no time
always best to remove the engine and do a full rebuild making sure everything is spotlessly clean before refiting

i'm having compression problems aswell at the moment. spoken to a couple of people and they all say either head gasket or piston rings, which means i may aswell do an engine re-build, but i'm trying to put it off for another 6 month's or so, any ideas what else it could be, just incase.

thanks
