hi all, need a bit of help picking the right Landrover for me. it will be my first landrover and i really need some advice on what to get, trying to decide over a dicovery 2 or a defender 90. i will be using it for commuting and generally gatting about, also green-laning, general off roading and possibly a tour off roading in the summer. reasons i would pick the defender is because its off-road ability, and its the best looking in my opinion. i would go for the discovery because of the comfort, espechally for the rear passangers and the superior on-road abilities.

which ever model i go for, will be modifies with a 2inch lift, larger wheels with more agressive tred, underbody protection and a winch.

id much appreciate any advice given, thanks in advance

A 300Tdi 90 or Disco would be a good way to go. Its up to you which one you choose, as you have said they each have different qualitys, what sort of people will be in it? Moaning at every bump and turn types or people that will put up with a bit more agricultural feel?

The 90 is a better, its built for the purpose and I have done some pretty mental things in them, it sits higher etc, but you said you were going to do some mods so with a Disoc I think in the end you will have have six and half a dozen.

If its to be your main commuting machine then it would be wise also not to take the machine to the limit.

You can split a concrete block with a log splitter but it dosent mean its good for it, a landy can do some mental things but it ain't always the best for it... I have a 90, its my main road car, and as a result I am careful about what I will do with it off road.

the 90 will be best off road, but not very civilised on the road.
the disco is the best all rounder. and the best value for the money.

Thanks for your advice you have given me much food for fort....hmmmm i think the 90 is more my thing i can live with the down points. i like the disco but the 90 just looks so much better.

Are dif locks standard or will i need to add them?

Central Difflock is standard on a defender, this locks the drive to front & rear axles, this doesn't guarantee that you will have traction as each axle can have 1 spinning wheel.
Locking diffs are an aftermarket add on, these lock the drive across the axle, and guarantee equal drive to each wheel. :) comes with optional snapped halfshafts, caused by suddenly gaining traction when the wheel is spinning

Thanks guys. so are "Locking diffs" a must have add on? how much will they cost?

Not sure if they're a "must have" - unless you're entering extreme competitions, and then you'll need a winch etc etc etc. I believe that they cost around £500 - £800 per axle.

A limited slip diff is another option, this allows a small amount of wheel spin before levelling the power across the axle.
