Hello from West Africa

Hello guys!

I am Simone, from Italy, living in Ghana, West Africa.

I am the proud owner of a 110 1996 Defender converted to 6x4 by carmichael as a fire rescue vehicle - it had a 3.5 V8 that got broken and it got fixed a 1994 200TDI (yeah I know not the best for such a beast but that's an opportunity to change it with something more suitable in the future).

My dream is to now transform it into an overland vehicle that will take me from here to the rest of the world....I would like to do so in about 18 months or so... so let the fun begin!

The car has been sitting idle for something like 5 years before they changed the engine and did some general maintenance to it to use it to pass the general tests needed to transfer it from a government vehicle (it was a Ghana Fire Service Truck) to a private owned vehicle. It was used it for a month or so before I was able to put my hands on it.

I now have identified a Land Rover specialist and will take there Wheely (yes that's his name) for a first check-up....I will open a thread in the right section of the forum to ask you some tips..

Also, you could be in for an argument about the 200tdi, a lot of people reckon it is one of the best engines fitted to the landy.

Mainly in the UK they think that. In places where fuel quality may be very variable, petrol engine is often better. Petrol engine is less vulnerable to bad fuel.

Got a few plans in mind, after civilising it (paint job + take off fire lights) being lifting him up 2" to start with... what do you think?

@Matty745 and I know much about Carmichael conversions, speshully the RR versions. Welcome.

The RR versions are the one like mine? What does RR mean?

Anything in particular that these conversions have such as larger fuel tank? heavy duty suspensions? I have been doing some research but not found much on this...any insights would be great - I would check it out to see whether these are still there or got changed by the fire service (!?).

I read somewhere that rear suspensions could have fitted Boge Hydromat self levelling unit to give additional support when the vehicle is used to carry heavier loads --> would that be the case for Carmichael RR?

Search the internet for......Range Rover (RR) TACR Carmichael Fire Commando. Not the same as yours and it was a good few years ago that I had experience of these...and even longer for doriz!!
