Hello all - not exactly a new member per say, though I haven't ever posted - just visited from time to time to peruse the forums for some great advice. My title references my location - Hawaii. I think I'm likely not among many on this forum at this locale, and as you can imagine, pickings are slim as far as Defender technicians here. CharlesY gave me a bit of advice a few months ago on veg oil in my TD5, and I'm happy to say that it has worked out brilliantly, and I'm running on 30% recycled waste vegetable oil, with not a single hitch (actually improved mileage and quieter/smoother running). I plan to gradually transition to 50%.
My vehicle is a bit of a Frankenstein monster to be honest, so I'm sure that as I stumble through learning it's many quirks, I'll be here from time to time looking up, or asking for, advice.
I'm the very proud owner of a rebuilt 2005 Defender 110 TD5 double cab. Oddly, I've come to discover that either the seller wasn't entirely honest with me, or didn't know any better, but what I think I actually have (judging from the VIN the ECU spits out to my Nanocom) is a 2004 D90, reassembled on a new galvanized 110 chassis, and with parts from at least 3 different Defender donors. The VIN, or chassis number, gives an engine code of 5, which I can't seem to find anywhere, so I don't really know what it's orginal engine was (though seems likely it was a TD5 given the year, and as the ECU controls it fine). It's gotten a JE Engineering Stage 2 upgrade, and, on Charles' advice, has been decat'd and EGR blanked. Since getting my new Nanocom evolution I've noted that the MAF isn't working - always spits out air flow of 4.4, so I have a new one on order, and am hoping that will alleviate the only problem I've had with it so far - some hesitancy and jerking in low gears/high revs. (Perusing other posts, I found that the wastegate doesn't stick, there's no oil in my ECU harness, air and fuel filters are new and check out o.k., EGR is gone, and though my MAF is getting a solid 12V, it's not sending out any signal)
I was curious if anyone knew of any potential problems with a setup like mine - that is, if the ECU/VIN is to be believed, are there any problems with running a D110 that thinks it's a D90? I couldn't think of any, but figured I'd ask. Thanks in advance, and a belated thanks for all the great advice I've gotten so far, both with this beast, and my prior D110 200tdi CSW. Cheers,
Eric
