Now it's getting colder I noticed this morning the heated rear window doesn't heat at all! I checked the connections with a multimeter and just over 12v is going back there but nothing anywhere else. the light on the dash also comes on as normal.

I can't see any obvious damage to the heating elements does anyone know of any other common faults it might be before I look at a cheap new window?

Many thanks.

Did you measure that 12v using both contacts on the window rather than to a body earth? if you have 12v on the two contacts on the glass then not much else it can be. You can test each row on the glass, if you put your meter negative on the earth connector and gently (carefully) touch the positive probe mid way along the row you should roughly get 6 volt reading. If it is either 0 or 12v then that row is damaged, gently slide the probe along the row, when you reach the break the meter will jump. You can get silver loaded paint to repair damaged elements.

On mine the light comes on and there is 12v at the connections but there are so many breaks in the element in the window it does nothing. I spent ages with a multimeter tracing along the elements and painting the breaks with repair conductive paint till there was 12v on either side. Then more bits of the element flaked off when I removed the masking tape from the line edges, and needed touching up.The back window now looks like a badly tippexed school homework, and does it work........... No so I gave up.

New rear door and window is on the list for buying sometime.

There are some small fan heater things on eBay for about eight pounds. You could replace the cigarette lighter plug with two male spade connectors and plug the two window power spares into them. I'm doing that till easter when I get a new galvanised back door with new glass etc.

150W 12V fan heaters are within the wirings capabilities.
150W @12V is 12.5A, that circuit is just for the rear heater, and fused at 15A

Yes. Electronics and electrics are my bag to be honest! I had already considered that. :D

It'll be a nice quick fix till I get my new safari door...... That is, when I eventually find someone selling exactly what i want - galvanised, with heated glass and wheel carrier.

I tried this yesterday with my TD5 - fitting a 12v fan heater direct into the demister wireing - Didnt work.

Every time I pressed the demister button my brake lights came on and there was no where near enough heat or fan speed to do a thing.

must be a fault somewhere, unless its summat to do with a TD5.
Mines wired back to the loom in the rear tub, so just not the door bit, cos mines attached to the roof/headliner and works just fine.

Sounds like earth fault.
