My 2002 v8 4.6 has a coolant problem as i have discussed before. The car has NEVER overheated as long as i have had it but it is pressurising the top hose to the point of being solid no coolant is entering the oil system but the pressure is blowing coolant out of the expansion cap which i did replace last week. It does not do this every journey either but the pressure is always there. i have spoken to a LL specialist who suggests head gaskets but would not rule out liners:mad: my question is did any cars leave the factory with top hat liners? as mine is one of the last didn't no if i would already have them. Also i was told you could not tell if the liners had slipped even with the heads off? Surely if you depth mic from the top face you would see if the liner has moved?
 
i have a very similar problem. my rangy started doing that since i owned it. what wasnt good after buying it i found some of that ceramic sealer stuff not good. them after a rew months of owning it water pump blew up. putting the impelar into engine shortly followed by over heating and head gasket failure. have since stripped the engine had heads skimmed and repalced. still the top hose but not losing water. went to a garage which said there a ****!! to bleed up. took him 2 hours once. where i have found a problem the day was my vapourizer for the gas was blocked up. hence air.so still waitng to see how its going. know when i do take cap off theres preshure. do rangys allways stay like that i dont know.

Usually you can check a liner by placing a straight edge across the block, and that is if the problem is that it drops.

Is it not the case of this engine that the block is too thin because of over-boring and that it cracks allowing the liner to move about breaking the flame ring, and I guess if that is the case you wont see anything, by machining the block and fitting new top hat liners that can't happen.

I think you need to get a sniff test done to see if the gaskets gone, with the possibility that the engine is fooked. I think I told you at one point to check with where it was serviced, and if it had a history of head gasket failures.
 
As far as I know LR never used top hat liners but had new castings made to resolve the weakness in the cyclnder walls - cracking under heat pressure and thus causing coolant pressurisation.

RPI has stuff worth a read otherwise the best answer is a new short engine from someone. I understand that TH liners just mask the issue for a while rather than being a cure.
 
The original liners are parallel and are known to slip, especially if the engine has severely overheated.
One train of thought is to go with machining the block and fitting Top Hat liners which overcomes the slippage problem, the question of engine life after the mod. has been done I cannot say.
I have had the problem twice, on a 3.9 Vogue and two years ago on my current 4.6 HSE. In both instances I opted for a new short engine which turned out in my opinion to be a complete success. The cost of dismantling, machining, new camshaft, crank bearings, pistons, cam followers etc. (In an old block) also has to be considered when having the mod done and this can be more expensive than buying a NEW short lump with those parts included.
It's worth noting that the problem did not occur with the old 3.5 V8's and they had parallel liners fitted.
 
in the end i sorted my car i decided to replace the engine with a coscast short engine which unfortunately didn't sort the problem! turns out the lpg vaporizer had failed pressurising the cooling system all sorted and been problem free for the last 5k

is it easy enough to fit the vaporiser? No re-calibrating needing done etc? Jus bleed the coolant through and removing and refitting the gas pipes?

I was losing coolant firstly when towing then just with the car. Bypassed the vaporiser and just using petrol at the moment and no loss of coolant or overheating or over pressurizing since i did it. Im hoping its the vaporiser and not HG of liner etc.

What do you think?

I've had this problem for the last 40K. Losing coolant as well. Had the gas test done and the engine is toast. Now saving up for replacement
