How does it work?

Is it as simple as something akin to abs using a fast cadence to control the vehicle or is it more complex with electronic modifaction to engine compression

Why does it take a vehicle length of run / drop to kick in?

Hi,

I doubt there is any link to engine compression.

I use it a lot and there is no delay if you have it already switched on before you need it. Switching it on just before a descent or part-way down is way too late.

I usually switch it on immediately when I go off road so that it comes on as soon as I lift off the accelerator in first gear - no delay.

If it actuated the brakes immediately you switched it on, I think you might be thrown forward in certain circumstances.

The solution I think is to have it switched on well before you need it, then just lift off.

That's what was advised on the LR Experience day anyway.

Here's what is says in the Owners Manual:

Hill descent control (HDC)

During a descent, if engine braking is
insufficient to control the vehicle speed, HDC (if
selected) automatically operates the brakes to
slow the vehicle and maintain a speed relative
to the accelerator pedal position

When driving off-road, HDC can be
permanently engaged
, to ensure that control is
maintained whenever 1st or reverse gears (‘1’
or ‘R’ for automatic transmission) are selected.

ABS and Traction control are still fully
operational and will assist if the need arises.

NOTE: With HDC selected, gear changes can be
carried out in the normal way.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for that. I dont have HDC but I wanted to understand it a bit better.

Someone had told me that it also links to the engine management system in some way... i.e altering compression - I cant find this anywhere though.
