Has anyone fitted the cheaper Ronbox 1

Hi. After seven years I have a 'green oval' on the drive again, having chopped in my remapped astra estate for a low mileage Freelander 1 this week. Vehicle is facelifted 55 plate TD4 adventurer manual. I don't do a great mileage in a year, probably less than 4000, but I do tow a lightweight 1100kg caravan about three times a year.

I know there are lots of threads about the 2a model, but wondered if anyone has fitted the cheaper RonBox 1 model, which is on offer at less than £100 now. Essentially just looking for a bit more power on the rare occasions it will be towing, or nipping into traffic flows when solo. I asked my insurance company about one and they are cool about it, once I explained the beemer mill in the TD4 is detuned by LR.

Specific to the Freelander 1 TD4 where do these tuning boxes fit and how long do they take to fit. Would rather hear from someone that has done it, rather than what the manufacturers say. Having owned Landies from 1962 series 2a, through Rangies and Discoveries I have learned to be handy with the spanners, but tuning boxes are a new thing for me. Not looking to do remap, just a tuning box.

All input is welcome.

you unplug the fuel rail sensor cable ..
plug one end of the tuning box cable into the fuel rail sensor
connect the remaining tuning box cable socket to the the plug you took out from the fuel rail sensor
secure the tuning box in some convenient location ..
job done .. in a few minutes ..
with the 2a there's a separate cable that goes to the maf sensor ..

well .. i've the ronbox 2a .. as the earlier model just adjusts the fuel pressure ..
i assume it's just got one cable that goes to the fuel rail sensor
( i.e. fits in between the fuel rail sensor to ecu wiring cable )
as for what the manufacturer sais .. with rover ron .. 'tells it like it is'

Thanks for the input guys, it is much appreciated.
I am loving the Freelander but a little more power on tap when needed, should really bring it to life.

Always said I'd never buy another Landie, but it's in the blood.. ;)

******* UPDATE ******* I ordered the RonBox 1 on Sunday evening, was advised it was posted Monday morning and it arrived today (Tuesday) at lunchtime.

Once I'd located the correct fuel rail sensor to plug into ( a lot of the connectors are identical so take care you have selected the right one), it was a question of plugging the box in and routing the cabling to a suitable location. I have chosen the bulkhead under the windscreen on the drivers side, as away from the heat there and an easy location to make adjustments (or turn off) if needed.

Now the question is, has it made any difference to the Freelander and was it actually worth £99.95?? I have to report that even on its suggested initial setting of number six, it has totally transformed the vehicle and the extra power and torque is immediately obvious. At 50mph in top gear, I put a bit of power on and it was like a juggernaut was pushing it along. To say I am impressed is an understatement and I still have a big grin on my face. :) It is just a shame that LR never boosted the power of the engine when they did the facelifted Freelander 1. The Nissan X-trail had its engine power boosted by the manufacturers and that made it a far more versatile vehicle and a more relaxed drive.

Now I have 'tested it' I just need to adopt the lighter right foot again, so I can benefit from the economy at other times.

Glad you like the new unit, lots of people do not believe that this type of unit works, but we both know they do.

I've got a synergy fitted but it's the 2a model, also got a dashboard switch so I can easily switch from power or economy mode

after I done the egr bypass, removed and cleaned out the inlet manifold I then fitted the box,

made a huge difference and often get 40mpg on a run

is suprising how they make the engines more responsive

I don't suppose anyone knows the approx torque after fitting a Ron box.
I only ask as I may need to replace my K series soon for something capable of pulling an Ivor Williams 510 horse box with two 17 hands horses.
The Xtrail has a bigger 2.2L engine and a lot more torques but I really don't like them,

The Ron Boxes / Synergies unusually don't specify figures after fitting one, but looking at similar devices from other manufacturers, I guess you would be looking at around 300 to 340 Nm of torque when fitted to the TD4 unit.

Yeah, I had a look at their website and they were quoting % increase at various RPM. I might just go that route as I've had two Xtrails and two Freelanders and although the Xtrail is more practical and reliable they have no character and are nowhere near as comfortable.
