alright mate been on phone today to council, go on north yorkshire council website, find out and about maps, these show you byways we can drive on, i asked if he could tell me lanes in area and they just said its too big an area coverd and just to look on there webpage for them they also said some lanes have tros on but will be still be marked as greenlanes on map but could be closed, so i think its just a case of findingthem on maps then going out and looking for them and if there are signs saying you can not drive on them well its obvious, have you managed to get out anywhere yet mate think i might go out at weekend if your up for it give me a ring if you do

aye up joe yer im up for it.... went to bolton percy yesterday found a couple of lanes, only problem was the road was flooded, was too deep to drive through with out a snorkel too :(
also theres a lane between oxton and acaster....

I used to live in halifax but now ime huddersfield (outlane) i would go laning with ya,tho never done it before, just done pay and plays, best regards, nunny

cheers very helpful stuff.... ive been glued to os maps since i got my disco in november but i have only found around 4 lanes in a 30 mile radius that are legal. (green crosses).

i have one last question on the subject of lanes. theres a lane not far from me again green crosses was a nice lane not to mad just gentle but when i got to the end the farmer had chained and locked the gate, i looked for another exit but there wasnt one, and the gate that was locked was the only one on the route, (didnt fancy driving over his crop) so i had to turn round and go back,
what i would like to know is does he have the right to do this ? as the lane is not restricted and there is no evidence (signs) to say it is,

even had a good chat with some walkers while i was out ............

If the lane is noted as a Byway and there are no TROs or other council restrictions on it, then the farmer is not allowed to lock the gate - it is a ROW, even if it goes through what might be deemed his land.....it is the council who would maintain the lane unless some arrangement was in place.

I suspect the farmer has locked the gate due to some idiots driving off the lane and probably causing damage to crops or land etc...

If you are quite sure the byway continues through and beyond the locked gate, why not seek out the farmer and ask him/her to unlock it to allow you through - if you are 100% and the farmer still refuses to unlock, you can remove the lock yourself with some bolt cutters or similar etc...

Action like this, I would not like to agree with, if its been done by some not wanting the lane used, they will only put another lock on it, best report it to the council.

That way you dont get blamed for any other damage done by others, and dont have an irate famer poking ya with a 12 bore
