........... not much use for anything else!


When I start my 200tdi up and until it gets warm I leave a swirling mist of white smoke behind me!
It isn't always when I accelerate, or if I rev the engine, and sometimes its only a small amount, but sometimes its a long cone of white smoke left for half a mile behind me!
I have recently added some new oil and I over filled it a little bit, but not by a lot by any stretch..... I changed the air and fuel filter last week but haven't had the chance to do the oil filter or oil change as the weather in Dartmoor can be a little unpredictable.
Someone told me that it could be a sign the engine is on its way out, but there is no drop in power, no turbo problems, it feels absolutely no different, just very smokey, then once it gets to temp it stops, and even when I plant my foot on the gas it only kicks out a tiny amount of black smoke, and its never chugged at all.

An old farmer type guy up here advised that I put a litre of petrol in the tank next time I fill up with diesel.

Any ideas anyone?
 
does it get much use ? if it's sat for long periods it's possibly just moisture getting burnt off - drain some oil from it and ensure the level is spot on

then take it for a nice long drive to get it nice and hot
 
I have done about 3000 miles in the last 4 weeks, Scotland, Norfolk, Dartmoor and Essex, it got better when I did the Fuel and air filter, but its doing it again.....
 
Not a drop, in fact I have hardly had to put anything in it since buying it 2 years ago and only had to top it up in oil once, this time. (excluding the yearly service obviously)


Someone else suggested the glow plugs?

glow plugs are only on for a short while (less than 20 seconds) just before starting, if your plugs werent functional i'd expect a cloud of black smoke everytime you start it from stone cold, and/or it's take a bit more turning over before it starts

it's deffo white smoke ?

did it smoke before you over filled it ?
 
Not sure it did to be honest, I certainly never noticed it.....


I am doing an oil change and filter change on Sunday so I am hoping it will sort it out, if not, I am going to start getting all fretty and worried every time it does it, Dartmoor is not the ort of place you want to break down in!

I started a thread about a year ago called "white smoke". If you do a search for it you will see what I had to say. I was actually getting white smoke pouring out of the exhaust especially when I de-cellerated. In my case it turned out to be a timing belt issue. As I say search "white smoke" I put all my problems into it.
 
I did a service on mine on Tuesday - oil filter, oil change, air and fuel filter, new thermostat and mines started smoking badly on start and when I really gun it. It never did it before - I think I may have angered the equilibrium of the 200tdi by putting some nice clean oil in!
 
I will say, once the truck gets to temp it stops smoking, and I have had absolutely no loss of power, it starts on the turn of the key, glow plugs or not, and has, to date (touch wood) never misfired.
 
yeah mine's still pulling like a train, turned over a couple more times today than normal before starting. Maybe I'll keep an eye on it and change the glowplugs if it gets bad. Could just be the new filters need to "bed" in and clog up a bit so it gets back to normal! haha

Thats where things are different on yours to mine. I was having problems starting and when it did start it belched white smoke out of it.

What actually caused my problems was the guy that owned it before me had the timing belt changed by some cowboy. I can't remember which it was, but it was either the tensioner or the idler pulley that he replaced wasn't even a landrover part and it had caused my belt to slip. When putting it back together they also damaged my woodruff key and although the crankshaft pulley nut was loose the pulley itself was absolutely seized on and took my mechanic the best part of 2 days to remove.

The difference in performance and economy once I'd had it sorted was staggering. I hadn't realised just how bad it was.
 
My 200 tdi would only do this in the cold climate of the UK, when 'back home' in the warm it would never happen. I did the obvious, glow plugs, oils filters anyway long story short it was an injector 'letting by' when the engine was switched off. Now I would have expected black smoke but no the first start of the day was a white cloudy one with the engine clearly running on three cylinders for a few seconds.

Why only when it was cold? I think the unburnt fuel mixed with the cold air made it look worse than what it was.
