Anyone put a series 3 gearbox in a IIa Landy.

I am trying to but it wont fit. It matches the engine (which I believ is already series III.

The clutch slave cylinder is on the opposite side, passenger side, but the front cross member is in the way, stopping it about 2 inch short of matching up to the engine.

Anyone had this problem and what was the workaround.

Thanks,
Steve

Presumably the IIA box broke in some way. If so I think you should repair it and put that back in. A IIA is not really a IIA without the need for a bit of double-de-clutching. They are usually simple and cheap to repair too. If you really must put a SIII box in then if your IIA box is a late type, the bellhousings are interchangeable with SIII gearboxes. Otherwise you could chop and weld the centre x-member so it's the same shape as a SIII type. Best to keep it original I think.

It's a 1969 model so I think bel housing may fit. I dont really want to cut lumps out of it.

The clutch is completely different i Is it interchangeable?

Cheers,
Steve

As a general rule, the clutch should match the gearbox, so if you solve the problems and get the Aer II box on, use a Ser II clutch, if you sway to a Ser III bell housing, use a Ser III clutch.

I haven't changed the clutch itself, it's just the release arm/slav cylinder that I was referring to. Will I have problems with the clutch itself...

Before I got the Ser III gearbox I consulted the forum... Only comment I got was that the pipe to the slave cylinder would need extending as its on the other side.

I had not anticipated these extr issues...

if your a cheapskate and using the 2a friction plate and pressure plate and the series 3 release bearing get yerselfs a long bolt and turn/grind it down to make a longer slave cylinder pushrod to enable you to use the series 3 slave cylinder, dont ask how long it needs to be thou cus i cant remember but its easy enuff to do
