Gearbox Selector Seals (1982 Petrol Series)

I've enjoyed removing an assortment of different sized fixings in order to lift the floor! I can now see why my Landy smells like a oil tanker! There is a large leak from the selector forks/gear stick seals.
2 Questions:
1) How easy are they to change/renew some say they always leak and that Landy seals are not too good (if so what is better)
2) Is there a breather on the gearbox, the whole top seems rather messy and there is a round black disc on top, I'm not sure what it does.
I do have the Haynes bible!

well thers oil sloshing about but not a lot , infact thers not a gaskit that goes on the top cover,



thats all the gerar stick consists of so no oil leaks from there mate



try the breather its the top plate, has a 3mm hole in it, the black disc has a spring clip on it so remove it and check thers a cork washer ring in it , that stops the oil covering the top of the box, check gaslits top end and corks between the filler plates , ther always suspect areas to leak

yeah that was the problem with mine, so i rebuilt the whole box, but im sure the answer to stop the oil was these seals, ther only 12p each ! well worth doing

infact , just go to b&q or somewhere and buy a self adhesive cork floor tile, cut the shape yer want carefully , the sticky side to the plates and put grease on the other side to the gear box, then yer can always get it off again

The good news is that the oil has kept the box like new! I'll have a look in the loft, I have some cork tiles for my model railway! (A Landy fan and an anorak what a terrible state to be in LOL!)

make sure ther good thick ones 3 or 4 mm makes a good gaskit, thin stuffs no good,
yeah slop the gear box in thinners or gunk and jet wash it, its amazing how good it is underneath,

Aye these are floor tiles so should be fine! I'm a happier bunny for not having to strip the thing down! (at least for now!)

nope, yer can do all that with the floor out, dont be tempted to glue them on tho, only one side if yer want to, the side yer can remove , ie the plate not the gear box side,
