Everyone says automatic transmission fluid yet the original manual says
SAE90EP like everything else but the engine, which is right ?

EP90 in main and transfer boxes on Series 3, also same oil in diffs, front
swivels and steering box.

ATF or engine oil only for later gearboxes with oil pumps (but this includes
the Series 3 V8 with the LT95 box). For all other Series Landrovers in all
gearboxes and diffs and transfer cases and swivels and overdrives and
steering boxes and PTOs (have I missed anything?) = EP90.

It's an early series 3 with 2.5 petrol so I'm assuming an LT77 box, so
EP90 then. Many thanks for the replies.

I'd be assuming Series III gearbox myself, and a 2.25 petrol unless it's
been played with.

?? No Series 3 was ever fitted with either a 2.5l petrol engine nor an LT77
box. All except the V8 had the Series 3 four speed all synchro gearbox, and
engines came in 2.25 four cylinder petrol and diesel, three bearing for
early production, five bearing for late production, or 2.6 six cylinder
petrol or 3.5 V8. If it has a 2.5 it is a modification, and if it has an
LT77 five speed it is a modification - and the LT77 DOES take ATF, not
EP90, so you need to be sure.

EP90.

the only ones with ATF apart from autos are the LT77 and R380 5-speeders,
and even they run better on MT75 synthetic.

I thought the LT95 ran on engine oil? one of 'em does.

LT95 does run on engine oil.

<Mr. Picky Mode>

Actually, the steering box should be EP80.

A typo on my part, sorry, it's a 2.25 recon (I have the bill for it),
according to the seller it's a 3 bearing but I'm not sure how to tell.

>nor an LT77 box.

Now I'm confused, I've heard a lot of people talk about the LT77 as the
basic S3 box.

> All except the V8 had the Series 3 four speed all synchro gearbox

Well it's 4 speed and seems to be all synchro so that's what I think I have,
what's it called then?

interesting application - presumably on the grounds that if it can leak
out, it can also leak in?

Sounds like it is a standard S3 box = EP90. The LT77 is a five speed box
fitted to early 90/110.

What was the number of the 'box on the early 110 V8 - the same four
speed as the Range Rover? Was it LT95 ?
