I have a J Reg 1992 TDI200 Discovery - Normally ultra reliable - how-ever today It has developed a serious problem.
It has an LT77 Gearbox that now refuses to come out of 5th !!..
I have looked at the top side, nothing blocking the gearstick movement-
clutch works as it can be driven,
I have had no problems leading to this issue - apart from perhaps a couple of hard gear changes recently - hard meaning not as smooth as usual - I did think I had a whine in 5th but can't really be too sure.
I simply slowed in traffic today, had to stop - tried to come down through the gears and found it was jammed in 5th - I had only 10-15 seconds before hand put it into 5th and was doing about 50.
My questions are:
what are the common problems for this & is it more practical and perhaps cheaper to source another gearbox rather than repairing mine ??
Clutch is fine as it was replaced 8 months ago along with the actuator arm.
