Morning all,

Just a quick question.

I have a 200Tdi Defender with LT77 Gearbox and LT230 Transfer box.

I'm thinking of swaping the Transfer box for a Disco one for better road drivability and fuel economy.

If i get one out of a 300Tdi Disco can I fit the R380 to my 200Tdi?

I've been told you can but will need an adapter plate and extra mounts plus lots of work.

Is this true, is it alot of work?
Where do I get an adapter plate from? are they available from suppliers?

Sorry for the basic questions.

Yes you can but you will need a

Short Bell Housing
Different Front Cover
Short Pinion (Input) Shaft

The bits above need to match the suffix of the R380 you are using.

You also need to be able to get that shaft into the box.

I wouldn't bother unless you can get hold of a defender R380 as the gear lever will be not really be where you want it.

Thanks for the info.

Yes it does sound a lot of work and a pain.

So I will just go for swapping the Transfer box.

Thanks again for the advice,

Just to let you know. I recently fitted a Disco 1:22 ratio transfer box into my Defender. The difference in motorway speeds and noise is brilliant. Wish I had done this a long time ago!

Thats sort of the idea.

Not so much motorway speeds but the general 50-60mph.
So the fuel economy will be better as well?

Suppose the cheepest way of getting a Transfer box would to be buy a old Disco and that way I could use the axles and other stuff for spares.

I guess so, if you have the room. Usually takes a couple of hours to fit by a good mechanic. Go for a low miles one if you can get it. Mine came from a late 300tdi with low miles but chassis probs which forced the scrapping of it. It's getting a good one you know will be spot on once you have it fitted - rather than find out it's not when you drive for a few miles! I used a bloke near Stoke who supplied and fitted my 380 gear box with my assistance - good way to learn about these things!
