gearbox fault message

hi all just bought my third p38 4.0 se auto it has started showing gearbox fault when i start up and switch off another thread i read elsewhere said a dodgy battery and the gear changes are rather harsh so i fitted a new battery but the message is still showing will the system need to be reset to clear the message or should it go itself? any help would be great ????
