Ok, the major strip down of my V8 is near complete. Ive got a decent chassis to rebuild onto, and a brand new bulkhead.

I am going to galv the chassis, but the question is, dare i do the bulkhead? I am obviously worried about warping.

So, does anyone have first hand experience of hot galving one?

Ive heard of someone doing one but with lots of strength bracing before it was dipped, but im still a bit cautious.

Any comments would be great!!

There was a Q&A thing in one of the LR Mags a few months back where someone asked just that. Concensus was that, you'll be lucky to find someone who'll want to take it on ad if you do it'll most likely be at your own risk if it's unusable afterwards.

IIRC they recommended a high zinc content primer before a very thorough painting as a significantly cheaper and easier alternative.

Hope that helps,

Or a stripped one - caustic soda bath folowed by citric acid bath should do the trick.

hey adz , you dont know anyone down our neck of the woods who does galvanizing do you? my cappings are begining to look a bit tatty.

No idea mate - tried Yella's pages? Nah... hang on that's fer sheep dating.

Yell.com ?

If you can get someone to do it they'll prepare it for you but I doubt you will get any one to do it cos of wots already bin said. If you seal the joints with body panel sealant and give it a good coat of paint and wax oil the insides to bloody hell, then after its fitted and running every now an again take the door seals and window off and wax behind them then waxoil it, it's going to last fer long enough, even if you dint do all that it'd last fer best part of 20 years.

Yeh, all what you`ve said sounds right, ive been in touch with a local galv firm and they said it could warp but would do it at my risk:rolleyes:

The guy i bought the bulkhead from said he knew of one being dipped but it had been braced. He didnt know how well it fitted after though:confused:

We also have a guy locally who does cold galving with a product called Zinga but the finish is crap as it looks like you put it on with a shutz gun, and he also couldnt get into the cavities like door pillars. Not too much money but i didnt see the point in that option if he couldnt do the "important bits"

Guess i might end up doin the safer option and splatter as much wax oil into it as poss. I suppose the old one lasted from 1986!;)

Got a wee while to ponder before i make the decision!

I will have some spare 110 station wagon ones i could get dipped if its any use

i wur gonna suggest making a 'cage' up to put it in. 3/4" square section should be strong enough to stop it warpin. they you could pass it on to the galvinisors so they can advertise that they'll do it, thus getting yerself a nice discount.

Mmmm not a bad idea, i suppose if it works it might be worth goin into production coz i bet they`d sell well. Another thought i suppose as i can get the bulkheads for £190 each.......

Hi Folks - I am looking for a local specialist that would be able to do a top bulkhead panel replacement. This involves taking front end off, cutting bulkhead top away, align new panel, weld new panel, reassembling front end.

I can't find anyone that may be able - or willing - to do this. Can anyone recommend a specialist that can do this in South East / West England (surrey maybe?). I have attached a picture of the panel

Any info anyone?

Cheers
