Hi,
Coming back from a trip over the weekend I was on the M40 when the fuel warning light came on in my '04 Defender 90. The guage was on 1/4 full. No problem I thought, got at least another 30 miles in there, carry on to the next service area.

By the time I reached the service area the guage was on zero and I had been gently sweating for the last 9 or 10 miles (especially when stationary in a queue because of an accident). Filled it up and got just under 50 litres in. Now I think the tank is 60 litres so the light must have come on when I had about 15 litres left. Anyone else experienced that? Can I do something about it?

Thanks

Think yourself lucky. On my 1986 LR90 the fuel light randomly comes on anywhere after half a tank. Also the last half a tank on the guage is actually about 1/4 of the tank. Very confusing when i first bought it! Now i just carry 20ltr of deisel in the back just in case!

the gauge can be misleading as it's tied to the float ball in the tank, i believe. sometimes mine just screws up and shows it has 1/4 left and slowly it creeps up to the 1/2 mark when i start driving. wow!! the more i drive the more fuel the tank produces!! the float can start sticking at times and give you a wrong reading.

on the flip side, the fuel indicator comes on when there's 9litres or less of fuel in the tank. i believe this is a fixed indicator, so it comes on when there's 9litres of fuel in the tank regardless of where the gauge reads.

The light comes on when the guage reaches the 1/4 full mark, just like it did in my old '93 V8 110 that was nicked earlier this year. With the 90 it seems as though I had about 15 litres left. I just wondered if anyone else had experienced the same thing or whether its peculiar to my vehicle.

The light on my 2002 90 Td5 comes on at 11 litres left - on a flat piece of road.
The light will come on prematurely if going up a steep hill close to the 11 litres left, and will stay lit subsequently on a flat road unless I stop and switch off for whatever reason.
The light will now stay off until I get to 11l - or go up a hill again!
But I do trust it not to run me out of fuel.

time for my first post .... likewise my 03 90csw come's on at the 15ltr marker.
i have now got in the habit of Zeroing the trip meter and re-filling at the 250 maker
this is usualy about 50ltrs (from now on the £50 POINT)

If this is yer first post Tim, how comes it says 2 posts:confused:
Dunno how many gallons/litres makes my light come on, but if it does ah'll just put more fuel in it. tend tae keep it above 1/4 tank at least;) :D
