As some know, i've taken out a petrol V8 and put in a 200tdi in my defender. I've just about got all the wiring sussed out now, (I think) the only thing in my cut off engine loom that I dont know where it goes too on the vehicle loom is the wire from the fuel solenoid. (the one that goes to the white connector on top of the solenoid, and comes round to a terminal on the other side) Can I simply, via an inline fuse connect it straight to the battery if I dont know where it goes? Or if anyone can give me a pic of where it connects to on the engine loom I will be very gratefull!
The only other thing I want to check is I think I'm very lucky with the power steering pipes. (remember I'm replacing a V8 engine) as the PAS filler is mounted on the opposite side to the normal way, all I had to do was disconnect the nut that went to the V8 engine pump, and connect it to the pump on the tdi. it means the pipes still run in the original neat possition along the chassis rail, only thing is the pipe to the nut runs up hill, and down again, against the inner wing, and before it connects to the PAS pump, it is only about half an inch from the alternator belt. But it is stiff, and wont move, and I have put a couple of cable ties on it to make sure it doesnt rub on the belt.
But my main question is although it is the same thread as the tdi pump, and screwed in all the way home, the thread on the old V8 pipe was shorter than the disco one.(about half the length) now does this matter? as I said it has screwed in right to the end of the nut so it touches the pump body, and is tight. do you think it will leak? or should I put some ptfe tape around it to make sure? Also do I have to bleed the PAS system? if so how do I do that?
Apart from that, everything else is straight forward now, and I know I can finish the conversion with no problems.
Oh one last thing, what do you do about the fuel filter container? as the pipes that go to the lift pump etc are not long enough to let me screw the unit to the bulkhead. do I simply replace the pipes with longer ones? if so, will normal 8mm brake hose be ok to do that? as I've never seen that very slim pipe that is on the filter container at the moment. Once I've sorted those annoying little problems, all I have to do is connect the rad and pipes.
